Ankle Foot orthoses (AFO’s) are often designed to support a weakened foot-ankle by providing support against a dropping foot. AFO’s are also used to control ankles that roll inwards or outwards utilising combinations of plastic walls or straps that restrict the movement.
The following video from CAMP, demonstrates one of the more modern Carbon Fibre AFO’s. You can see how AFO’s control a dropped foot as well as have an effect on the walking pattern at the knee and hip. Often compensatory movements are adopted in walking to enable a person with a dropped foot to advance the lower limb without catching the toe or tripping. AFO’s often remove the compensations made.
